Yeah, good thing those Russians can't drive and are all corrupt, otherwise we'd have to rely on the North American media to get footage of it, and I doubt they'd bother.  Or they'd try to blame it on Obama / the Repubs.

Whoah coach must have been tired last night :-)

The best videos all came from "dash cams" which really isn't a thing here (though i guess here it would have been cell phone cams)

And as the dazzling meteor display we had here in 2008 showed the media was plenty interested even though it didn't kill anyone.

Hmm, that I was last night, too many late nights 'n all.  Re-reading my post, it doesn't carry the same tone as what I intended to say - that is, that it's dash cams that caught the best displays and that dash cams are popular in Russia due to people trying to protect themselves from both bad driving and corrupt police officers.

yikes!

Russian drivers are accident prone. With 35,972 road deaths in 2007 (the latest stats available from the World Health Organization), Russia averages 25.2 traffic fatalities per 100,000 people. The U.S., by comparison, had 13.9 road deaths per 100,000 people in the same year, despite having six times more cars.
:o

PS: http://io9.com/5985276/incredible-details-are-emerging-about-russias-chelyabinsk-meteor
apparently 2012DA14 = 150 feet across (45 meters), you'd think that since it was being tracked it musta been way beigger than the Chelyabinsk asteroid, right?

NOPE. 56 feet across (17 meters) jeepers! And to think that the "experts" didn't even KNOW ABOUT the one that streaked across the Russian sky! In fact, Experts Say: "largest since 1908 Tunguska event"

(as time goes on, more horrifying, terrifying, life-altering details will likely show up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Russian_meteor_event )

Here's another fun one, that actually travelled over Alberta: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_Great_Daylight_Fireball.  And it was a little closer to Earth than DA14.

Whoa! Tangentially that reminds me I've wanted to read "Rendezvous with Rama" for ages!

I thought I lent that to you?

I also found at Value Village or somewhere the other 2 books in the unplanned trilogy, the 2nd one is actually pretty good too. In both cases I really felt like I was part of the adventure, going along for the ride with the Rama-nauts. The human ones I mean. Not the ... well I'll shut up now #nospoilersfromme

Maybe you did and my brain erased it, I'll download an eBook version maybe it will come back.

Whether or not you've already read it, it's worth re-reading anyway imo. Normally I'm not much of a fan of The Author's slow pacing, but it totally worked in Rama for building tension and immersing me in the world of the story. In fact, a part of me would hate to see a film version, just cuz it could never do it justice, in terms of scale and emotional impact as the mystery unfolds.

Although here in modern times I can actually imagine the technology allowing for it to be done well, at least the visuals. But it'll all come down to the quality of story/character http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134933/ (but it's been in DH for over a decade, so maybe it not coming out yet = a good thing?)
