Look into the history of this "film", it's the most UN-HOLLYWOOD Shakespeare theatrical release thingie ever.

I heard about it in an interview with one of the more recent Whedonites, the guy who played the stoner in Cabin. Long story short: Whedon hangs around with these folks in RL, often with a whole BUNCH of them together at once, they do improv and Shakespeare and stuff weekly or monthly or whatevs, somebody probably-jokingly said they should film it, and Joss took 'em seriously... and voila. "home video" turned "film festival entry".

Apparently the strain of making THE AVENGERS wasn't too great for writer/director Joss Whedon, who- on a twelve day break from the production, staged and shot a modern retelling of William Shakespeare's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at his Santa Monica home.

In MUCH ADO, Whedon's managed to stage one of the freshest interpretations of the Bard I've seen in ages. Using the original prose, but married to his own modern sensibility ... it was both faithful to the original play, but also given a thoroughly modern upgrade that didn't feel the least bit contrived. It's an interesting exercise for Whedon, who usually relies so heavily on his own dialogue, but is forced to completely reinvent his own style with this.

My first thoughts: wow, Baz Luhrmann was nice to lend Joss Whedon his trailer-making team! (but obviously Joss is not gonna "Gatsby" this modernization)

It supposedly was shot in something like a week or two.  The whole movie.  And was done during the making of Avengers.  Saw an interview with Nathan about it last month.
