Mr. Analog

I updated Adobe Acrobat reader yesterday and it installed Bonjour (ugh). Anyway I didn't figure this out until I booted up my machine to start a minecraft server and found that it could ping internal network but nothing outside my router.

When I ran ipconfig it showed TWO default gateways, turns out the Bonjour service adds one, I couldn't think where I might have picked up Bonjour again (it's like VD... from Apple/Adobe) but it was easy enough to remove:

Anyway, you can remove it (in Windows 7) by opening a command window, navigate to the Bonjour directory and run the following commands:

mDNSResponder.exe -remove

regsvr32 /u mdnsNSP.dll

Reboot and then delete the folder and problem solved

WHAT AN ANNOYING THING

I'll be having a look myself -- what the hell does anyone actually need Bonjour for anyway? What does it break if you disable/uninstall it?

C:\>mDNSResponder.exe -remove
'mDNSResponder.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\>cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour

C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour>mDNSResponder.exe -remove
Removed service

C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour>regsvr32 /u mdnsNSP.dll

C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour>

Thanks buddy!

So it's not just Bonjour, but a specific implementation of it (hence the specific command to uninstall)

"
About Bonjour
The Bonjour for Windows package provides Bonjour zero-configuration networking services for use by Windows applications such as iTunes, Safari and AirPort Utility.

Bonjour enables computers and devices to automatically discover each other using industry standard IP protocols without the need to manually enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers. It is particularly useful for connecting to devices such as the iPhone, Apple TV, and AirPort base stations.

More information
Bonjour is commonly installed by third-party software to provide zero-configuration networking capabilities to various applications.

No problem, I've had issues with Adobe products installing it when I upgrade Bridge or other publishing tools. The funny thing is it doesn't always affect my network settings

Mr. Analog

FML it came back with something, god only knows

Probably a PDF update

Turns out Speedial got installed somehow

Yeah I love this forum for this type of thing "hey what was that annoying bug or quirk or feature we talked about fixing or disabling a long time ago? Aha, found the thread, buh bye unwanted BS!"

So...  We should fill this all kinds of useless information, to make it harder to find the useful stuff?  That way you'll feel like a l33t whack-a-mole dev? :D

Seriously, though, we don't record enough of our tech horror stories here.

Don't we just save those for when we get together? I have numerous ones from my current project alone.

Thorin

Okay, let me clarify - tech horror stories where we also have a how-to-fix set of steps.

Can I post them in the form of a question and see if others can solve them? Lots of unexpected failures and miss communications in the last few months requiring some fast thinking to fix.

Why not? Sounds like a great idea.
<Zapata Prime> I smell Stanley... And he smells good!!!

Hey, absolutely.  I'm sure we all enjoy offering possible solutions to problems here, it's what most of us do for a living :)

I promise to only post ones I have solved, but it is fun to see other peoples solutions.

...and even further clarified, we tend to limit thread creation to those annoyances/horrorstories that justify the addition of an hyper-emotional* "Well-known Tech Megacorp X is DUMB for doing things this way" proclamation!

*especially if after investing many hours, and expending many swears, trying to "figure the damn thing out", until the inevitable "Aha! WTF?" moment.
