Based on this Heritage Days weekend, I'm not even sure the Flood Of 2026 is over yet!

Very thankful me and a dozen of my son's friends labored hard in the back yard last fall, to dig out rocks and move around so much dirt, to ensure his new house in Sherwood Park would be flood-proof. These 2 months of virtually non-stop heavy rain = zero leaks. One of his next door neighbors wasn't so lucky, quite a mess.

Sump pump float valve failed in June, one room got wet, sump pump got fixed the following morning, all seemed good. A couple of days later the rest of the basement had sopping wet carpet, just enough for everything to get squishy.

Insurance will cover $50k, suggested On Side as the company to fix it. On Side gave us a quote of $25k just to demo the basement floor and bottom two feet of the walls. They tore out the carpet, set up industrial dehumidifiers, then arranged for asbestos testing. Asbestos tests came back positive, now we're waiting for a new quote. It's taking them forever.

We've had a storage pod on the driveway for a month now, we've tossed a ton of stuff in the garbage, we had an asshole neighbour call bylaw to anonymously complain about the height of our grass and the garbage on our front lawn (which was there overnight and taken away the next day).

We have a bunch of stuff crammed into the main floor that we would otherwise put in the basement, but can't because On Side is taking forever to even get the demo done. Supposedly they need to go two feet up the wall to disinfect, but after 30 days I'm pretty sure if there was any mold growing it'd be full-on everywhere.

Still trying to figure out where the second batch of water came from. Don't want to tell the insurance any different than that it's from the sump pit, otherwise they might not cover it.

The river in St. Albert is normally 3'-4' deep. It crested over 10', flooding walking paths along the bank and threatening to flood a few buildings. It's down to about 8½' now. The ground is so saturated nothing is absorbing, it's just sitting on top. It's insane.
