Interesting way to get around the backwards compatibility thing with consoles... seems Sony is going to include a PS2 inside your PS3s to do the job.

I wondered how they were going to do that since the PS3 hardware wouldn't be able to emmulate the PS2...

the PS3 saga gets more crazy the closer they get to their release date.. I don't recall any consoles with so many reported last minute changes to design..  Hammering in the pervious gen chipset when you have been billing software emulation as a feature for over a year just sounds odd.

Aye but nothing new.  PS was including hardware in the PS2.  Actually as the PS Two came out, some games (including PS2 original revision coded games - read oldest of the old PS2 games) did even work on it, yet were labelled for the PS2.

When it comes right down to it, I think this feature (backwards compatibility), well not a terrible idea and shouldn't be excluded, really isn't all that big of a sale feature for most.  Most of us, once these new consoles come out, don't really go back to the old games to play.  We just get a newer version of the game on the new console and be done with it.  I'd estimate (at least in North America), 1 in 10000 previous games are replayed on a new console from the old media, if that.

I've heard rumours about issues with the processor design which is why Sony has been reluctant to release dev tools (as they might be already obsolete).

Great job Sony; go from No. 1 to No. None in one massivly botched release. Reminds me of Matsu@%&#a and their Crapular 3DO release back in '93.

Well, I know Tonnica and I pull out a few old PS1 games and play them on our PS2s. The PS1 library is huge and is full of a lot of great titles that are still fun to play (SFA3, FFVII, Rival Schools, Ridge Racer series, Puzzle Fighter, etc) some of thse games have been redone for the PS2 but at the core the games are still the same and worth playing and if you already own them then you get the bonus of not having to buy them again.

To get an idea of how big PS1 games still are, do an eBay search for PS1 games and sort by price highest to lowest, you'd be surprised how well some older games still sell for (and not just game collections or HTF accessories).

Aye the PS1 library is huge!  Just can't see the feature of backwards compatiblity today being a make or break feature for sales.  I'd say its in the "Nice to Haves" vs the "Must be Included" sections of the spec sheets.

Actually, one of the features of the Wii is it has an NES/SNES/N64/GB/GBA emmulator which is a huge selling feature for me. I sold my NES ages ago but I still crave all the old great games. And yes, I could illegally download ROMs and put them on my computer or a hacked firmware on a console but if I had a chance to, for only a coupla bucks a pop play SMB3 or Zelda III again I would.

Anyway, I have to go take a Nintendo, see you guys in a few min.

Since getting my 360 i have played a boat load of Halo2, so in that case the backwards features are nice.

The PS3 had my interest so much up until E3, after that I basically have gone from a 9/10 wanting it to about a 2.5/10.  When i read that the games look no better then whats on the 360 and in some cases worse (re: GT4 vs. PG3), its hard to really justify the cost when i can score a Wii for $250.

Anyways, the PS2 in the PS3 i remember hearing that rumor a long time ago, at the time i thought it rather simple as really it should be a CPU only and perhaps the northbridge, but why not combine them on to one die?
