There's a rumour floating around that J.J. Abrams would like to cast Matt Damon as a young James Kirk for his proposed Star Trek feature.  Whoever he gets to play the role will be contrersarial, but at least Matt doesn't have the baggage of his friend Ben Affleck, who was also rumoured as a possibility.

Damon might not be that bad, also a little star power.  I have respect for him as an actor as I feel he actually acts and does a decent job of it unlike his boyfriend Affleck who pretends to get by on his looks.

Should be good actually.  Abrams isnt all that bad of a director, a little sappy but I think that meets the Star Trek mold.

The rumours that the next Trek movie would be "When James T. met Mr. Spock" are rumours that have been denied by Abrams & Co.

Although JJ is apparently going to be helming the next ST movie the storyline has not been identified yet, but apparently this rumour of "young Kirk and his vulcan buddy" are unfounded :P

Looks like "Star Trek 11: because 10 wasn't loud enough" ( ;) ) is officially NOT a prequel of any kind...

When asked about the feelings of the remaining Star Trek fans, the source quipped: "Trek fans were not able to keep the last show (Enterprise) on the air and we are looking on bringing over Alias and Lost fans and if the old Trekkies like the new movie great, if not too bad. We have to boldly go were no Star Trek has gone before."

Yes, it was the "Trek fans" who killed Enterprise, and not the fact that it sucked on its own...

I saw most episodes in re-runs on Space during the spring of 2006. Didn't see from "episode one", it was more like halfway through season 2 that I first saw it regularly:

Seasons 1 and half of 2 = unwatchable, agreed. Almost physical painful to see the actors try to be Spock, Data, McCoy, Picard, etc... Geez, guys, be your own character!

Most of 2 and 3 = WTF? Creative writing, character development, decent acting, appropriate musical score, lotsa violence... almost didn't recognize it as part of the "Trek" franchise ;)

Season 4 = A little too much "let's bring back character X and tidy up a story arc that had actually been completed just fine thank you very much" and "we're cancelled so we gotta be all 'epic' and 'speechy' to convince the audience it's all canon" ;D

PS: http://shatneriskirk.ytmnd.com/ was brilliant! Shatner's OTT acting was always the biggest reason ST:TOS is endlessly rewatchable -- and why Boston Legal totally owns :) Very few thespians can play a larger-than-life full-of-himself character and do it convincingly without making the audience hate him ;D

Even though I don't watch Star Trek, I still feel that Affleck or Damon would be a bad idea.  In fact casting any well known actor would be a bad idea.  James Kirk is a highly well known character and the people who have played him have done really well, I think to put an already well known actor in to play him in the upcoming movie would cause too many biases and expectations.  They need to use someone fresh and new as they did in Superman, but the Superman role is a whole other can of worms haha

Darren Dirt

Maybe the guy who plays Kirk in "New Voyages"? At least some of the hardcore ST fans seem to be quite pleased with ST:NV (especially with a few ST:TOS leads doing guest starring roles) and so would possibly be more accepting of him than some Big Hollywood Name...

IMO (of course) "hardcore" Trek fans are the precise problem with Trek. Sad to say, but I think it's time for Trek to say "Goodnight Gracie". It will never be as good as it was, ever.
