So, I have been out of the loop on where to get MP3's for awhile. My bit torrent sites are fine for apps and games, but suck for music. But, the girlfriend is looking, so what are you guys using?

I know Limeware is out, due to spyware but even more so the show I saw the other day showing that for many ID thieves Limeware is their number 1 way to to get to your information.

Limeware was back in, when it went open source, as it no longer has a spyware issue.  It just buggged you for the full version every time you launch it.  Although I didn't see this ID Theft story though, so maybe not again!  And according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_sharing_applications) it has spyware again! Damnit!

Then there is Shareaza, although the damn thing sucked ass for a while

Then there is Waffles for MP3 Torrents but that is an invite only.  If you can get in there, you're sailing.

the shareaza domain was hijacked a few months back.. I think you can still safely download it from source forge but beware of the .com page.

emule works but can be painfully slow.

If you're just looking for something quick n' dirty try Seeqpod:
http://www.seeqpod.com/

I can find just about anything I like on there, makes other sites look like a ghost town.

Otherwise I run eMule with Avast! in active scan mode on that directory. It's slow but finding music is easy.

If you want more official ways, Amazon and Magnatune are rather good places to get legit DRM free music for a decent price.

QuoteUpdate: A contact of Jonathan Nilson is reporting that Nilson can neither confirm nor deny that he sold the domain to the scammers.
Why can't the guy own up to it? Retard, say you sold it if you did, or say you didn't if you didn't.

In the United States only.

If you don't mind only nabbing one album or piece of music at a time (instead of every album by an artist all at once) then I recommend using RapidSearch. You'll come up with the occasional false positive, but it's dead simple to make sure the files you download are scanned for viruses.

Why Magnatune is not evil

We work directly with independent musicians world-wide to give you downloads of MP3s and perfect-quality WAV files. We never work with major labels, and our musicians always get 50%. You can listen to every album in its entirety before buying or becoming a member. (more propaganda)

noice. :) also, brilliant.

I especially like the "genre stream" option... I'm guessing the plan is that you'll listen to it for a week or two, then you'll probably buy an album or two since you're hooked :)

Amarok (my music environment of choice) has a built in music store interface that supports Magnatune. Its rather quite nice.

While I agree that Magnatune should be applauded for "not being evil", one of the problems with it is that none of the mainstream music that gets played in my house is on there.  No Carrie Underwood, no Green Day, no Raffi, no Offspring, no U2, no Weird Al, etc.
