Well I saw this one today... and well... WOW!

This was as good as Wolverine, IMO, and was really a superb movie, standalone.  But as a fan, it really shines (and as a fan, if it almost pisses you off to the point of leaving in the first 10 minutes just hang in there, there is a reason - and you'll know why when you see it).  A great rebirth of the franchise, setting the scene for future movies and great adventures all over again.  Should allow for a rejuvenation of the fan base and immersion IMO; not to say Star Trek was dead yet, as the last couple of movies have been just fine, but not that AWESOME, KICK ASS, FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC as say Transformers or the fore mentioned X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  I look forward to where the next movie (or maybe tv series) takes us next.

And the acting in this one is phenomenal.  You can tell that either the actors were fans of the Star Trek universe, or they had some of the best coaches or are some of the best mimics in the biz!  I won't spoil it by naming the favs of mine, as I wouldn't want to give anything away.  But I must say almost each of the main character's actors hit the nail on the button, almost too uncannily so.  Makes you do a double take more than once, at least it did with the group I saw it with today.

I urge fans of SCI-FI or ACTION films to watch this one.  Being a Trekkie (of any degree) is just a bonus, with insider experiences that just add to the whole film.

I was going to go yesterday but I was in a pretty bad mood by the end of the day... and it looks like I won't get a chance today either.

I disagree, it was good, better than any of the ODD movies but other than that it just stands alone as something new. I keep seeing reviews saying it is amazing but I think it was just OK.

I could start ranting about the villain and his ship, but I will wait till others have seen it not to spoil the story.

...it was real hard to skim this hilarious flame war without letting a few plot spoilers into my brain, however I am sure I will enjoy it when I see it anyway (possibly during this week after work -- anyone interested?)

I need to hit up ST and Wolverine soon.

Chekov.

OMG Chekov.

The whole thing was pretty great, merits a second watching. I think it's one of the first movies I'll watch for the heroic characters rather than the villains.

Mr. Analog

I was completely shocked, I greatly enjoyed this film and encourage ALL nerds, geeks and basement dwellers to see it

Sir,

as a followup to our correspondence earlier in the week,

how does Monday sound to you? I believe an associate of mine, a young lad interested in the area of study we discussed, would greatly benefit from joining in our gathering, and considering the economic climate we all have the misfortune of enduring I believe the matinee timeline would be most logical from a financial point of view. Have your people email my people, if that is mutually acceptable.

yours,
D-man.

You still up for later this week? The only snag is I'm on call so... I may have to bail at some point of the stupid pager goes off.

Rocked.

9/10 (losing 1 point due to the slow first 10 minutes, kinda reminded me of how T:S started off kinda slow ala "oh great, did this flashy young director just ruin a strong franchise?" then soon after "omg this is a great movie")

Ok, now that the whole gang has seen the movie I can talk about what I did not like. (SPOILERS for those that may be lurking)

- Car scene in the opening (nokia, stupid jump, stupid kid)
- Time travel, DAMMIT it is the most over use pliot item in Trek and this one blows away everything but the Enterprise series, which was also about time travel!
- Why is a stupid mining ship so power full? Just because it is from the future?
- Red matter (because neutrinos anti-matter and reversing polarity where getting old?)
- Why even bother drilling a hole why not release the red matter beside or on the planet, seems like it would suck it all in anyway.
- Handy release valve in the engine room which is Water cooled and has an unnecessary grinder in it. I think someone watched galaxy quest, because my brain screamed "this episode was poorly written
' when Scotty beamed into the water.
- Vulcan's and Vulcan children are dicks, just like in Enterprise
