Here's an interesting article that discusses how long it really takes to learn programming:

Prayin' for a 20!

gcc thorin.c -pedantic -o Thorin

Bad programming is easy. Idiots can learn it in 21 days, even if they are Dummies.

Good programming requires thought, but everyone can do it and everyone can experience the satisfaction that comes with it. The price is worth paying for the sheer joy of the discovery process, the elegance of the result, and the commercial benefits of a systematic program design process.

The goal of our book is to introduce readers of all ages and backgrounds to the craft of designing programs systematically.

I'll never forget my first day of Win32 programming class, the instructor put his arms out real wide and said "this is all of programming in C++" then he put his hands close together "this is how much I've learnt in 10 years" and damn if it isn't the truth.

The more I learn the more I realize is still out there.

Gerrit "Jerry" Schenk! and btw iirc he drew on the board a line, and also pointed at part of the line and said "this is how much I expect to learn from YOU guys" or something like that. :) Jerry was like the "Cool English Teacher" in the 2 College Humor sketches, only not pathetic/sad at all.
