When plot details for STO were announced way back whenever it bugged me about how they went about creating conflict for the players to engage in.

Something I always liked about classic Trek and TNG was the idea that things were on the brink all the time (echoes of the Cold War I guess) so the exploring that went on (which in itself was interesting) was made even more dangerous in that something they do out in deep space could be the spark to galactic war.

It seems to me that they could have had something really interesting if that sense of unease about the concrete things was wrapped around exploring new worlds and civilizations. But instead it's just a big ol' war with different factions.

Why do I imagine wondering around an empty map final fantasy style till there is a random encounter.
Or leisure suite larry style you try and sleep with every female you meet till you start a war.
