Maybe we can convince you to build something for aesthetics; I've seen what you've put together before in that reddit thread, and it all looks nice.  A 50x50 castle won't even be that big once you start putting buildings in the yard.  You might want to go bigger, or plan for a second curtain wall once the inner 50x50 keep is done...

Quotebut I really enjoy trying to figure out how to automate things like wheat/sugar cane/etc. farms.  I love pistons and dispensers.

Anyone would think you're an engineer. :P

Whee!  The forum finally allowed me to register an account.

I am Pants, my son is Blank.  He's not very good at typing, so the most you might see from him in-game is a "hi".  This is the first time we've ever ventured onto a server with other people.  We've always played on a server I host for the 2 of us.  We have this habit of getting bored with a world we made, then re-starting a new one from scratch.  We were about to do that yet again on our own server when I remembered LennyLen telling me about this place, so we decided to give it a go.

We boated a long ways from spawn and found a decently sized unexplored island to set up on (we passed a lot of Mushroom Islands along the way).

There's not much there yet.

Oh, here is a link to some stuff we did together on our last SMP world.

So how have you liked playing on this server so far?  I know at times everyone's way far apart doing our own things, and people seem to be in different time zones and sometimes too busy (I know I haven't been on all week).

To be quite honest, it's mostly been like playing on the server I host for my son and I.  This is good for me.  Every now and then I get to see a few people log on and have some chat, but mostly I'm alone.  This isn't a bad thing for me, because I sort of like being alone.  I think my son (Blank) might have become bored because I spent so much time prettying up my skeleton spawner and zero time doing "fun things" like caving and exploring.  He really isn't interested in aesthetic stuff, and the skeleton spawner dealie I did was absolute boredom for him.

I think I might switch to more exciting stuff like exploring the Nether - maybe to find and tame a Blaze spawner - to get my son more involved.  I'd also like to link my nether portal to the Spawn City once I figure out how that works, so people can visit.  My son would very much like that.

My northern bases are linked to Spawn City via a railway tunnel I built in the Nether.  The two main considerations you need to consider for railways in the nether are - make sure they're encased, so Ghasts don't fireball them, and place the entire track at a single height (Y value). The reason for the latter is that Zombie Pigmen can spawn anywhere, on any tile, so to stop them from spawning on the railway and blocking it, you place a non-solid block (glass is generally best) 2 levels above the railway.  This stops them from spawning, and still allows rail travel through the blocks.  However, you cannot transition through non-solid blocks that are not at the same height, which is why the tracks need to be flat.

But how do I get a nether portal in Spawn City to begin with?  I imagine I have to travel back there and make one, but how do I link it?

Thorin

Lenny's railway is all at Y=64 in the Nether, I think.  Most of our portals are at Y=117, though, because that way you're always above the caverns.  You might want to dig your passageways first so that you link up with the rest, then build your railway after.  Of course, building it at Y=117 means you don't get to watch the Nether roll by as you're in your minecart, but it also means you're not dodging ghast fireballs.

I've actually been thinking of a giant raised railroad in the Overworld linking the different locations.  Although that'd take a while to build and would use a lot of rails and take a while to ride, too.  But then we could make settlements along the way.

There's already a portal to Spawn City in the Nether.

There's another thread on here where we're planning a join cave crawl sometime this weekend: http://forums.righteouswrath.com/index.php/topic,9105.0.html.  At the moment it looks like a Saturday/Sunday afternoon and/or evening thing.  One or more of my kids might join in as well, I dunno.  If you wanna join in, make sure to say when you're available; I'm sure your son would like it if he's an explorer.  I tend to fill the helper / guard / miner roles, really whatever needs doing.  I know Mr. Analog tends to fill the miner / builder roles.  We'll see if Melbosa or Lazybones or LennyLen show up :)

Mr. Analog

Spawn City Portal is here: http://mc.tomasu.org/#/36/64/34/max/0/0

In the nether there is a ladder going up to several portals as well as paths to other portal areas outside the door.

Attached are screens of the location of the building near the posting board at Spawn City

In the Nether the Spawn City portal leads to a building that has multiple ways out, if you follow the ladder up you'll find a nexus of marked hallways that mark the points of the compass but be warned that the structures there are EXTREMELY labyrinthine (and no one so far has made a map.)

It's very easy to get lost up there.

IF you do make a new portal, please label it as it does make travelling somewhat easier, you can see some of the points in the cave view of the nether:

(actually I realize that the signs need to be updated so that they appear as directions/POIs)

I may pop in, but probably won't be able to participate, as your afternoons/evenings are generally when I'm in bed or at work.

But your giant machine needs _exercise_!  I guess our evening is your morning, right?

And Mr. A, nice screenshots and writeup of the portals.  Yes, you're right, the passages can be confusing in the Nether since everyone's kinda done their own thing.  We could implement a regular grid with signage at each intersection pointing east, west, north, south, current coordinates, and direction back to spawn?  We could then just connect people's side passages to this grid and mark said side passages with doors and signs indicating whose they are?

I find I get confused and lost once I move down to the lower levels in the Nether.  Thank god whoever made the path to the blaze spawner did it with stone so it stands out, otherwise I'd've had to kill myself to get out of there.

Okay, I dug a 2x1 tunnel from our nether portal and eventually met up with the other nether portals.  Our tunnel is down the south side (no minecart track yet, and it's about a 1200 block walk in the nether).  I didn't have any wood to make a sign to label it, so I sneaked into Thorin's house like a ninja and stole 2 signs (don't read this Thorin!).  The nether tunnel I dug out to our portal is at the very end of the South nether tunnel.

If anyone happens to want to visit our little island, be aware that I made a couple of Nether portals.  The first one you see at the end of the nether tunnel emerges at a part of our island that I haven't done anything with.  Skip that portal and turn right - go down the stairs.  Another portal is there and emerges right beside our little settlement.

Hey, is that griefer back?  I'm missing some signs!

:P

I have to ask, though, are your portals perfect-placed?  If you just left 'em wherever the game made them, then they're probably a bit off.  "Perfect-placed" means the nether X and Z coords are exactly the overworld X and Z coords divided by 8, rounded down.  Perfect-placed portals make it a lot easier to place other portals nearby if so desired.  Out where you are I don't think it makes a difference, but I perfect-placed many anyway just in case in the future someone wants to build a nether portal near my stuff (well, and also OCD).

I wouldn't know anything about that.

Not yet.  I spent my time digging through miles and miles of netherrack.  I've researched how to correctly place nether portals and plan on doing that shortly.

Kursed89
HeroCraig89
AirFuzion
MentalShark

I did some more exploring and found a few signs with Storrmey's and Gizmo's names on them, and then YellowBear remembered that two of her friends have/had dogs by those names.  Also, these names were in YellowBear's and LadyLeenie's settlement, so it would make sense that they're all friends.  YellowBear is checking with them.  RawrBox is LuckyCh4rm's friend.  I don't know if he'll ever log on again, though, as those two like spinning up their own servers and adventure maps.

In my exploration I also noticed that aethun's old hotel looked like it'd been hit - there were entry holes just a few blocks over from actual doors, and every door was open.  And then a creeper exploded next to me and took out part of the hotel, sorry aethun :(  I also made a couple more cows in LadyLeenie's pasture, as I remember seeing eight to ten there and they're all gone (and it's a double-high fence with door access, so they're not likely to have just walked out).  And then another creeper managed to follow me into someone's house (Stormey's maybe?) and blew up part of that :(
