I think it was a sig on Slashdot that basically said "You wouldn't say 'alittle' would you?" which makes it point rather concisely.

Totally, there are some games out there that had notoriously bad P2W models even with progression (World of Tanks, Battlefield Play4Free, etc) and consequently they got spanked for it.

Things will be interesting as the game ages and more items show up in the shop.

I keep coming back to the TF2 well as an example, they put SO MUCH thought into balance before new items drop it keeps the community playing and the little baby whiners to a minimum. I can't think of any items that are must haves, there are items that will enhance certain play styles, items that rely on the skill of the seasoned player but nothing you can buy that will grant you ultimate and unyielding power (well, maybe the Ghastly Gibus)

The only big change they made over the years was reduce the bonuses/detriments of item sets, so some sets that were kind of weak (like the Gas Jockey) when they first dropped aren't so bad but aren't great either.
