Title: Where are Wii
Post by: Lazybones on November 20, 2006, 08:45:17 AM
Just thought I would start a thread for Wii spotting's. There should be regular shipments of these units as there are no production problems.  If anyone sees some available let me know, I still want to pick one up ASAP.

I will post here if I track any down as well.

Wii where a little disappointed not to get one on the weekend. Every store we talked to earlier in the week figured they would last a few hours, not sell out at opening.

there was some on the shelf in the west end toys r us earlier today...

Probably gone now, since Mr. Analog posted in the other thread that North America is sold out.

I would guess anything spotted on the weekend is gone now. However I would like to know if anyone sees a store get restocked.

Good idea for a thread.

But especially "thank you" ::) for the thread *title* -- now I've got a particular anthem from ever-youthful party rocker puts-on-a-HELL-of-a-live-show Kim Mitchell (http://www.google.com/search?q=lyrics%20kim%20mitchell%20"where%20are%20we") stuck in my head... :P

It appears more Wii  have landed at the Clareview Futureshop tonight. They couldn't sell me one though because they had not yet been put into the inventory system. I would assume other Futureshops would be the same, so there might be a lot more Wii available tomorrow!!!!!

That's good news, and rather surprising to me...  They're really able to get new product that quickly?

There will be piles of them in the next two months.. I feel sorry for those that actually payed double for the eBay ones.
QuoteThat ambitious Reggie Fils-Aime, the American president of Nintendo, has set a very high goal for the Wii. He has revealed that he expects to land 1 million Wii?s in the hands of North American consumers in the upcoming 2-3 weeks. He goes on to say that they hope to sell another million by the second week of January.

Good on you, bud. What Wii games did you get with it? And how many NGC games do you have in your collection to try out the "backward compatibility"? If you need me to drop by with my "stash" let me know ;D

I just got Wii Sports, but there are a bunch I want to rent. I have a lot of NGC games, however they are MIA (Goddam Commies hiding my games in my own house [I hope])

When you pick up Zelda you should give me a ring, I really gotta see that.  With it currently being #2 "best game ever" (even with my beloved Gamespot giving it a lower then average rating) I might just end up getting a Wii after Xmas.

Yeah, I figure you'll get really good at the 'Sports since it comes with it, and that way you can kill all our asses when we first come over to "test our NGC collection on the Wii"...

And Zelda, wow the demo videos I have seen, I don't care if it is rated "T for Teen", I am totally getting that for my son's birthday (February 1st) and will gladly help him solve any of the trickier puzzles... Yeah, that's it...

PS: So many people scrambling to get a Wii to play, to share with their friends and kids, or even to re-sell.

And yet, many of you are familiar with these guys (or the concept -- probably some copycat sites by now).

It didn't take them long... Smashy, smashy! (http://www.biertijd.com/mediaplayer/?itemid=861)

Not nearly as bad as when they smashed the X360 and the PS3.  Those were in seriously hot demand.

Zelda's on the top of my list of WANT -> GET right now. I already know the Baseline EB is sold out as well as the Clairview Future Shop, EB, and Wal*Mart. I would have bought a copy on the 19th but they were already sold out when I arrived! Next on my list is determening if Red Steel or CoD3 is more worth it to get.

In the meantime, I have Tales of Symphonia and Wii Sports to play. That'll keep me busy.

(I also got a Wii today thanks to hitching a lift with Lazybones)

Yeah, it's the same guys as SmashMyiPod, SmashMyXBox etc. -- Ben something.

I don't think they dressed up as [insert well-known Sony character here] when smashing the PS3 ;)

Nice choice of songs, too "What's wrong with a little destruction..."

Yeah, I expected a lot of flying-remote problems/injuries to be reported within hours of launch. Especially if eating microwave popcorn while playing ;D

I managed to snag Zelda on launch day so I have both... going to have to wait till I get home to check them out.

There is a chance the Wii might see some action before the end of the work day.

If you listen to this weeks 1Up podcast they talk a lot about the Wii, and it would not surprise me in the least that you could break the strap and a TV by the stories they share on the air of how people bowl, or play tennis.

Point 3 is rather silly. I think there will always be stupid people on a console launch trying to cash in. Remember the XBox 360 where people were suing because they pre-ordered XBoxes and there weren't enough? Or the people who tried to get a class action suit together over the overheating XBoxes? Or the people who tried to claim that the transformer / power supply was too hot?

It's all crap.

For those that wanted to know, YES there are batteries in the box. The unit comes with EVERYTHING short of an SDcard to store saves..

Now the hunt is on for a second WiiMote and Nunchuck.

P.S. The Wii mote is FREAKING SMALL and LITE! It doesn't have much mass even with some batteries in it.. You would have to be pitching REALLY REALLY hard to do the damage in thouse pictures, but I could see some over zelus players doing it.

QuoteThe unit comes with EVERYTHING short of an SDcard to store saves..
It comes with 512MB built in NAND flash. If you don't care about tranfering your saves, just make do ;) Though you can transfer saved back and forth from the internal and external flash.

I wasn't sure if that could be used for game saves, haven't read the manual yet. Will play MP3s and show Photos from the SDCard I hear.

I'm 99% sure the internal flash is used for saves, and other misc data. But the SD support is cool. Though getting that "SD" logo aint cheap. Just like with the DVD logo. Too bad they couldn't just skip the logo ;) like cheap taiwan sd reader knockoffs.

So, if you can put save games on the SD, would this open the market to a save game website?  I hope they at least encrypt the save to the machine for those type of saves that could be hazardess online
Title: Re: Where are Wii
Post by: Tom on November 21, 2006, 01:30:08 PM
The saves are probably tied to your Mii and/or your "user id" (cant recall its real title...). Someone WILL hack them, its just a matter of time. And the reason you can put them on the sd card, is so you can bring them to a friends house :P
Title: Re: Where are Wii
Post by: Shayne on November 21, 2006, 01:32:53 PM
I'm aware of why you would want them on a portable device :P  The Mii profile is probably the best way to do the encryption system.  I recall when the original Xbox was so easily hacked saved games were very easy to find, but if you wanted to take say a hacked Forza saved game online it wouldn't work.  Keeps the playing field even.

Keep an eye out for those games that come with a Wiimote... I believe Wii Play (which I mentioned above0 includes a Wiimote (but no Nunchuk) since they know that will be a 4-player partygame type of thing...

And re. the size, when you see how the Wiimote looks in photos next to the console itself, wow -- I was trying to tell my son, best way to describe the box is "imagine the Gamecube a little wider, and a little longer, and above 1/3 the thickness. Or basically 3-4 DVD cases piled on top of each other." Pretty accurate? ;D

If the save games are unencrypted, I can see the GameFAQs Save Game pages becoming very, VERY popular in the future.

I'm interested to see if the virtual console ever implements the "gameplay movie playback" ability that some emulators have right now. Then you could replay proof of awesome game wins. Probably not, but time will tell.

As will cheating in online play.  I would bet that the normal saves are all able to be used by anyone, I doubt the online profile version are.

Thorin just got a Wii - there was a surprise shipment of 15 Wii that just came in this morning at the Edmonton Downtown EB Games. Once I found out we booked it down there and it was WII GET! time.

Unfortunately there are no accessories at that EB Games. Currently the North Futureshop shows like it might have accessories (via website availability check) but I've still gotta call to confirm.

Yes, pretty close.  It's 1" longer than a DVD case, 3/4" wider, and as thick as three DVD cases, no more.  The stand adds about 2" to the height, if you use it.  The power brick is a little shorter, about half the width, and a little thicker than the Wii.  The sensor bar is maybe a little longer than the Wii, 1/4" thick or so.

Also SuperStore Clareview has a pile of the Nintendo WiFi dongles.

I've got Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz and Monster 4x4 World Circuit.  No Zelda for me.  I want to get Golden Axe and SimCity for the Virtual Console, and I could see getting one or more of Wii Play, Mario Party 8, Super Mario Galaxy, SSX, and The Barnyard, as these all sound like fun games for kids.  I could see getting Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII and/or Prince of Persia for myself - these will likely be T-rated, so not for the kids.  I'm such a mean dad.  I wonder what the controls will be like to fly a WWII fighter plane...

I think boxing is the only one that requires the nunchuck. Could be wrong though.

On another note, SMB looks fun! I saw a Wii kiosk at WEM yesterday. Zelda looked great, I don't know what people were saying about it being so "last gen". May it had something to do with the large LCD displays they had the Wiis hooked up to. Probably with a component cable. But yeah, it looked nice.

I think the reason the parallel to last gen is drawn is because it simply looks nowhere close to the graphical splendor of Resistance or Gears of War.  That and well, the GameCube version looks very close to the Wii version.

So just Boxing eh, thats not so bad.  Problem is I got a feeling that Madden also requires it and I'm really looking at getting the Wii and Madden, perhaps Excite Truck (ive had fun playing it over at EB) which does not require the Nunchuck.

So its 3:30 and I checked EB, Rogers and Future Shop (all Clairview) to no surprise they are not to be found.  I guess I'm pretty much the only person left looking for one now :P

Don't for get to check TRU , BestBuy and Superstore. Also each location of each chain will tend to get different allotments and restock days.

Keep in mind there's a Wii Remote and Nunchuk in the box.  We're all looking for extra Wii Remotes and Nunchuks for the multiplayer aspect, but there's nothing that says you can't do Boxing against the computer with just one Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

It's in the TRU flyer that we received a day early :P  Zellers apparently also stocks the Wii now.  Sorta weird, I'd never think to go to Zellers for a game console...

My rogers connection didnt pan out today (no wii in the shipment) which isnt abonormal with games as they come all the time.  Right now I'm thinking I'll be at TRU for 5-6am on Saturday.  (is it 20 per store?)

Well, I guess thats good news, I'm hoping that 6am is early enough for my arrival, I'm not looking forward to the -10 weather I will have to suffer through for 3 hours though :P  Bundle up warm I guess (as I doubt my other half will be interested in joining me as she works on Saturday).

I've done some Googling and it seems that if I got to TRU for 7:30-8:00 (1.5-2.0 hours early) I should be in the top 10 people there.  I think I could deal with 2 hours a lot easier then 3 or 4 of them as can my woman who would be more interested in keeping me company at that time.

Looks like Best Buys are getting ~20 each for tomorrow morning.  I unfortunately don't have a way out to them (woman has the car tomorrow morning).  Grr.  TRU on Saturday is the hope and dream.

This is going to be crazy!  Ive been reading the forums over at redflagdeals regarding Wii availability and its going to be a zoo over at TRU tomorrow morning.  Limited stock of Elmo and Wii on the same morning when the store opens.

I do have a partner though, my brother is gonna wait with me.  We are going to swing by TRU later this evening (6ish) figure out what time they open, right now im thinking it might just be an all nighter.

I've never waited like this for anything (not even concert tickets) sort of exciting to participate in the hysteria.

You might want to bring a tent, what with the freezing rain and snow.  Good luck.

I'm actually thinking I might not need to go.  Having chatted with a couple of Alyson's friends at Rogers they have in their system 6 coming, its just whenever they get here (tonight, tomorrow, Monday?)  I am really in no real rush to get one in all honesty and to spend 12 hours outdoors in the cold when I could simply walk into a Future Shop come January/February and pick one up seems rather counter productive.

Perhaps i got a little caught up in the hype of it all.  I dunno.  Im gonna ponder my choices over the next few hours and decide.

If you were unable to get it from Rogers, a suggestion on edm.forsale was to order it online from Best Buy or Future Shop and specify in store pick up.  You could be waiting a while if a lot of people have already done this, since they'd be ahead of you for whatever stock the website gets.

Unfortunatly I didnt have access to the internet the last couple days (in Cold Lake) but the Cold Lake Wal-Mart had about 20 nunchucks and 10 Wiimotes.  Perhaps Wal-Marts got a recent shipment?

(responding from the Wii) I concur!  Now just to figure out how to adjust the sensitivity on the Wii Remote...

When typing, a list of possible words appears; I use it for about a quarter of the words I type (it's only useful for words that are four letters or longer, I find).

Also, isn't there supposed to be a way of zooming into parts of a page?

The number 2 button will enforce single column browsing and super large fonts.. Takes a second for it to change the rendering.

There are already wii browsing sites showing up

Melbosa, you were looking for a Wii for your friend, right?  CowGirl found one at Walmart in St. Albert and bought it and a second Wii Remote and Nunchuk.  Let your friend know!  I'll let you know what the total is so your friend can give you the cash or a cheque to bring along to D20 Modern next Friday.
Title: Re: Where are Wii
Post by: Thorin on October 12, 2007, 11:42:17 AM
Price is looking to be in the $360 to $370 range including the extra Wii Remote and Nunchuk.  CowGirl or I will post the exact price sometime this evening when we're looking at the receipt.

Disclaimer: I hate how people pre-ordered multiple PS3s to sell at a profit.  CowGirl and I will buy Wiis for people and pass them on for what we paid; we are not in this to make money but to spread the love for Wii (which will lead to more and more games, it is hoped).  Don't tack a "finders fee" to the price you pass on to your friend.
I don't know if you were thinking about it or not, I'm just making sure my position is known ahead of time.

By the way, the St. Albert Walmart got a shipment of 81 Wiis that went on sale at 8am.  11 of those 81 were sold by 11:30am.  That's three Wiis sold per hour during the day when people who would buy video game consoles are typically at school or at work.  The salesman said they'd be sold out by the end of the day.

Go Team Nintendo!

Apparently the Wiis were on sale for $269.83, $20 less than what they were at launch.  Yay Walmart!  Strangely enough, the Wii Remote and Nunchuk were $45.97 and $25.97, each $1 more than they were at launch
