Warnings
City of Edmonton - St. Albert - Sherwood Park
9:17 PM MST Tuesday 17 January 2012
Wind chill warning for
City of Edmonton - St. Albert - Sherwood Park continued
Wind chill values of minus 40 to 50 developing tonight and lasting through Wednesday morning.
This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.
Cold Arctic air has invaded much of Alberta and will bring temperatures of minus 31 to 39 overnight. These temperatures combined with winds of 15 to 20 km/h will give wind chills of minus 40 to 50 in the above mentioned regions overnight into Wednesday morning.
At these extreme wind chill values frostbite on exposed skin may occur in less than 10 minutes.
Son of de bidge...
Dress real warm if you're going out.
Now that is cold. I want to punch people around here when ever they complain.
So cold that the heater in the Suburban on full heat is blowing out cool air - sure, it's warmer than outside but it's still not warm!
Also, punching people when they complain is always a good idea.
Hey hey hey, violence never solved anything... except every single major confrontation in human history
*cough*
Anyway, I'll be heading out today :C
over/under on delay in Melbosa saying "quit yer whining, this is nothing, you never grew up in Mani..."?

Mornings like today = I picked a good week to not bother shaving!

LOL
That's what I told myself today... then my beard froze
:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I really wish I could work from home on days like this.
Oddly enough I can, but didn't lol
I had to water the plant and I ran out of some essentials at home, so I have the added bonus of going grocery shopping after work (huzzah)
I should pick up some ice cream, it won't melt on the way home!
I don't think my furnace has stopped running since I woke up this morning.
Yeah, Mr. A, it was weird to hear there was anyone in the office today. I've got a car with a broken block heater plug, so even if I eventually coaxed it to life here, I'd probably end up stranded at work at the end of the day. And I was going to fix that, but kept procrastinating on it...
They're predicting a slight warming trend, and then a sudden up-tick on the weekend - -2 as a high on Sunday! I'll believe it when it happens, weather forecasts for Alberta for five days in the future are notoriously wrong.

I know so many people whom treat their vehicles this way and then bitch (not saying you are one of them btw) about how put out they are when their vehicle breaks down and what a piece of crap it is. Especially around this time of year.
I'm actually pretty surprised there are as many folks in the office today as there are...
Yeah, that's the trouble with putting things off until later, later always comes :D
Yeah... Well, my Chevrolet Suburban is a piece of crap.
1. The spare tire ended up seized to the vehicle due to poor design allowing road salt to corrode and rust the fasteners. CowGirl was stuck by the side of the road with kids in the vehicle and a tow truck driver that spent over an hour trying to get the spare off. He eventually gave up. Good thing it was summer so they didn't freeze to death.
2. I've had my brakes done every year. They get a horrible warp in them constantly, and I've had five brake jobs in four years. The dealership keeps asking me how we drive, and I keep saying normal. Seriously, this is the only car I've ever had where the rotors even warp to begin with, leave be within a year of getting them installed. But you know, it's my fault, not the shoddy design on GM brakes (go ahead, look up the class action lawsuits against Chevrolet for their brakes).
3. My power seat has never worked quite right, even after having it serviced three times. GM can't do electrical worth beans.
4. I've had my brakes actually freeze shut the first year we owned it. Of course, you get it towed on a dolly to the dealership, then they bring it inside and let it sit to warm up so they don't freeze their hands working on it, then the brakes work fine. It's weird seeing a Suburban with its rear tires not moving and its front tires doing all the work, given that a Suburban is a rear-wheel-drive / four-wheel-drive vehicle.
5. When a few light bulbs in the dash stopped working, the ones illuminating the heater controls, they couldn't replace the light bulbs. The design is so bad they had to replace the entire heater control box, something like twelve hundred dollars according to the bill. Good thing that got done under warranty.
6. Constant rattling from the pedal assembly during driving. Now, I have a movable pedal assembly so that the gas and brake pedals can be moved closer or further away from the driver for more comfortable driving (a boon with CowGirl and I being a foot apart in height), and I know that assembly needs to be movable. But really, does it have to rattle? Apparently, it does.
7. Chevrolet dealerships don't even follow the manufacturer's guidelines for servicing. One time I phoned up the dealership and asked for the 100k service. They said, "What?". So I read them all the things that are supposed to happen at 100k from the book, and they said it'd be about two thousand dollars. TWO THOUSAND for a SERVICE. Then they suggested I just do their $99 annual inspection and see if that found any problems. Compare that to my Suzuki experience, where they knew exactly what needed to be done with each service and actually had a price posted for each of the different services, depending on the time it would take to do the service!
And after all that I still love driving it, especially in these conditions, especially filled with people and their gear.
And I'm not bitching about my Volvo not being ready for winter because I knew it wasn't ready - it needs the block heater plug fixed, new tires, and hatch supports. But at the moment we're spending more than we make, as CowGirl is going back to school and not working for that time.

My vehicle is maintained regularly, and always warm the moment I enter it ... I gotta share it with a few hundred other folks but imo that's a small price to pay ;)

Funny, sometimes your chauffeur is not always there when you would like and sometimes he doesn't even go where you want him to!
I keep telling the LRT driver to turn right and go up 129 Ave NW but he never does.
THE NERVE!
WOW check out the "weather warnings" page for Canadeh.
pretty much the entire NATION has a "-35ish" cold-weather warning!

Says the guy whom owns a car, but probably still hasn't fixed the tail lights.

When did that happen? Miss-informed I am...
October, 99st northbound idiot lady in a van in the lane directly to my right decided to try pulling a U-turn (train was about to come, she musta been in a hurry) and somehow she forgot to... ummm... LOOK TO HER LEFT. Scrape goes the paint, wheel well and right turn signal damaged enough that I dropped it off at body shop and got a rental for a week.
Cost of repairs too much esp. considering age and >200,000km so RBC called it a writeoff, sent me a cheque for about 1k which is probably the most I coulda got if I tried to sell it with the other issues (shocks especially) so it all worked out fine. LRT/bus since then, but with the weather this month I'm okay with that. :)
Was that a lot less than you initially paid for it? Insurance companies always try to offer the lowest value they think you'll agree to on first offer, but occasionally they can be convinced the car is worth more.

1998 Mazda Protege with about 250,000 km (original engine) that I got in May of 2008. Paid 4k for it, and during the summer I was checking online sources of buying/selling used cars and I would be lucky to get more than 1k for it apparently.
It was almost like a $73/month lease, pretty happy with it and will certainly consider Mazda/Toyota for the next vehicle, those Japanese engines last forEVER!
As crazy as this sounds, trying to get the Suburban started this morning in "only" windchill -31 seemed like it wasn't that bad out. And I was out there for 40 minutes, so... It's warmer than it was, yay!

At least on the Celsius scale I find the difference of 5 degrees in any direction significant good or bad.
