Oh, and my wife installed Shareaza because of you. Then she uninstalled it, but its still on the damn computer! Now I have to wipe the registry by hand... One of these days!

Why would anyone uninstall Shareaza?

If you want to search for stuff or only install one P2P app, install Shareaza

If you want to get a full featured bittorent client install Azureus, it auto updates and has almost every feature under the sun for bittorents.

Ive seen this said countless times, but when i go searching for something on there i can never ever ever find it. Be it a hacked copy of BPFTPServer, or an obscure album by an obscure Spanish-Alt-Metal band.

I always go back to the tried and true eMule. Sure its slow and inefficent, but when im searching uncoutable numbers of file i find that i can always get what i want. It might take 48-96 hours, but i will eventually get it.

eMule is also updated a lot more frequently.

Im sure that Shareaza has its good points, but its brutal search system kills it for me.

The problem with Shareza is configuration, once you have it set up right you can find a lot of stuff on both the Gnutella and eD2K networks.

I've menaged to get all sorts of odd things, the only problem I find is that some of the rarer stuff takes forever to download.

Well other than its native G2 network shareaza is not as good as any other client on any of its other supported networks. It is just handy since you only need one app and one port forwarded if you are behind a firewall.

The key for eDonkey is to clear the host cache and download a fresh server.met file. Then set Rasorback2 as your perfered server.. Should have no problems getting results.

Anyway, if you prmarily search the eDonkey network use eMule it is FAR better for that network. If you casualy use several networks Shareaza is very nice.

Development on Sharaza has been ongoing, but there isn't much to show in terms of public release or in features that most people think are cool.

- Right to Left languages are now supported in the Alfa builds (lots of work just to get that in there)

- Many bug fixes an improvments to the download code

- FTP support so Shareaza can be your complete download manager

- a bunch of code refactoring for a more open development environment (had only one developer for a long time, imaging the code)

- performance optimizations

- Scheduled bandwidth managment ....

I concur. I tried a few bittorrent clients. When I came across this gem (Azureus), I uninstalled all the rest. In fact, it should have come up instead of Shareaza when I tried to download a bittorrent file. That was my first indication someone had installed Shareaza!

And why would I want to uninstall Shareaza? Because I don't want unknown programs on the computers I maintain. When I found it, I did not know what Shareaza was, how it came to be there, or what possible other software got installed on our family computer.

From what I've read, Shareaza is harmless enough, but I want to discourage my family from downloading and installing x number of "free" software (laden with Gator/Claria hidden nuggets).

So... Wasn't this thread about Stargate: Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica?

Do you have user profiles for your family members? Demote them to power users and restrict installs

Heck one of my friends used to come over to my place, we'd watch DVDs and then crash, but then he'd get up and surf all night on my fast connection (well compared to his dial up), finally I got fed up waking up at 4:30 finding him still on there instead of sleeping (and therefore becoming useless the next day) so I tweaked his user account access so that he couldn't connect after 2 AM, it would punt him off the system. Problem solved.

Another thing you should consider as your kids get older, especially if they will be surfing unattended is install a keylogger on their box and check it from time to time. It's amazing what kids will do/say on the net when they think no parents are around.

One of my former coworkers ended up doing this after he got complaints from another parent when he found that one of his girls was involved in harassing a schoolmate online. That put the fear of Dad into them I can tell you!

Yes, I have separate user profiles; however, everyone finds it too inconvenient to switch, so we all pretty much use my wife's profile (as she's on first thing in the morning).

That's why you're on her MSN list; so that you could get a hold of me via MSN after hours

I know all about keyloggers. I don't have to worry about it too much yet. However, our computers are and shall continue for a long time to be in a *very* open section of the house - the living room. Same goes for TVs.
