QuoteIn North America [to launch Nov 17]: 20GB for $499, 60GB for $599.

Think we'll get a near 1:1 conversion by then, or do you think they will still goon us?

We're getting gooned a bit, but not overly badly considering our dollars not at par yet.

Quote Canada: CAN $549 (20GB HDD) and CAN $659 (60GB HDD)

haha - I just did a quick currency conversion.  As of the date of this post, $599 US = $659.715 Can.  We're actually getting a 72 cent deal, until you factor in that there's probably more taxes to pay here.

Also, I've heard that there are other differences than just HD size between the $500 and $600 versions, however the article didn't mention what the differences were.

As it turns out, a little examining of Sony's announcement press release reveals the $499 model will lack support for Memory Sticks, SD and Compact Flash cards, no built-in Wi-Fi and will surprisingly have the HDMI output removed (necessary for achieving the much bragged about 1080p screen resolution).

More crippled than the Xbox 360 Core system.. All you needed to add to the Core was a harddrive, Sony seems to have gutted it's lowend version.

Cova

I'm not sure how they're planning to do it, but Sony's PR document indicates the low-end one (without HDMI) can still do 1080p.  Maybe they plan to have an accessory that uses the multi-av connector thingy and give it a DVI or HDMI output from there.  And no mention at all of the dual-HDMI outputs they were talking about before.

Sony's PR doc is available here (Word doc)

Ok, some new developments;

1. The price is steep even accounting for inflation

2. Most developers don't have their Dev kits yet

Their is a good 2 minute clip float around where Carmack totally comes out and says Microsoft did it right, Sony did it for the "performance crown".

New diddy says the basic system doesnt come with wireless controllers either.

Nintendo for the win?  From what I have seen and the enthusiasm from many developers, Im really thinking i will buy one.

Tonnica

Just thinking of the cost of the "complete" PS3 makes my head hurt. Even if I had the console for 5 years I still couldn't justify the cost. I couldn't justify the potential loss if the thing kaks just past the warranty either. That's assuming the "performance crown" helps to keep it afloat for that long.

Could I say I care about the addition of Blue Ray? No. I don't have a very positive opinion of Blue Ray to start off with anyways.

I don't mind the inclusion of HD though - I even have the hardware to accept the HD signal (my monitor has dual input - one of which accepts the HDMi input). Even if my monitor doesn't have the Absoloute Bestest(TM) black depth it can still relay a high quality signal smoothly. Even with my low-rez vision I enjoy the difference of a higher quality image. But the PS3 isn't the only one offering HD.

In the end, it'll be all about what games PS3 will have in its library that'll sway me. And if Sony hasn't sent out their devkit yet then they might just have already shot themselves in the foot in that regard.

Considering the cost and the shape, I'd rather get a grill (about the same size/shape and costs less too!). Real steak grilling physics! High-rez cooking! Time based food missions! Mmm, steak.
