Check out these pictures from WWI, in colour.

The French were the only ones who took the time and had the technology available to take pictures in colour on the WWI battlefield. I guess while busily taking snapshots they neglected to notice the Germans coming over to say "hi".

Interestingly, the fifth one down has a single black soldier surrounded by white soldiers.  Nice to see some countries integrated much sooner than others.
