Board games comming to XBOX Live

I just read through one of the conduits of Leipzig gaming news, and was jolted by a piece of news: Xbox Live is going to be moving into classic board games.  I don't mean, like, Chutes and Ladders or some @%&# - though I don't doubt that GrowPot420 would snap that up on day one.  No, I mean like Settlers of Catan and Carcassone.  Pillars of the tabletop gaming community, so to speak.

This is probably the biggest news of that convention for me.  Getting people together to play these games, or finding people to play them with at all can be a trying endeavor.  This is near Goddamn optimal.

"Settlers" is apparently a well-known award winner.

To me, reading "between the lines", how sad things have gotten: the very idea that people would willingly sit and play electronic versions of board games with strangers on the other side of the country, preferring that over actually getting together with their living breathing family and friends and having some actual eye contact and realworld socializing -- yikes. After all, isn't that why we play Poker on occasion instead of just playing online games all the time?

As for the Live stuff, I think it is great.  Only having my Xbox 360 for a couple of days, and I'm already hooked on the whole Achievement, Downloads, and Demos Live has to offer.  No this won't stop me from playing with friends, but this will give me a choice to play a board game when none of my friends are available to do so.

Exactly.  And I imagine its hard to find people to play some of the more obscure games, especially at the spur of a moment.  Plus I can't see a reason why you couldn't have offline multiplayer on some of the game ( the ones where there aren't hidden cards)

Yeah, well I'm thinking it's easier to set up a game of Monopoly by logging into Live! than calling all your "too busy (OR SLEEPY) friends". On the other hand if you set up notice in advance people can often make it; D&D, Heroscape and Poker nights have proved this.

Settlers of Catan - I have that at home.  I'd love to play it with another adult sometime.  I'd love to play the new Axis & Allies sometime, too.  I wouldn't mind playing Risk, even.  The problem, as stated earlier, is getting people together to do that.  Can you imagine setting aside, say, every Friday or Saturday night to play boardgames or RPGs or poker with your friends?  Even though in high school, that's probably what most of us did...
