"A publicist for George Carlin says the legendary comedian has died of heart failure at a hospital in Santa Monica, Calif.

Jeff Abraham says Carlin went into St. John's Health Center on Sunday afternoon, complaining of chest pain. Carlin died at 5:55 p.m. PDT. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. It was announced Tuesday that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor."
"Bleed all over them, let them know you're there!"

I just heard on The Sonic; they played an edited "7 dirty words" and I almost cried.

I guess that's "#3" eh?  :'(

Wow. I've enjoyed a few of the "Twain Prize" shows on PBS over the years (2004 - Lorne Michaels, 2005 - Steve Martin)... They are always a fantastic collection of clips of work by the genius being honoured, with a lot of funny things offered by friends and colleagues, then finally some brilliance shared by the honouree. So amazingly tragic the timing, in this case... :(

I'm actually far more depressed over this than I thought I would be.

George Carlin was a big part of my life... I'll be putting a couple of his LPs on tonight...

Garner Andrews mentioned a recent "poll" of the top 100 comedic influences and Carlin was second only to (of course) Pryor.

Avatar changed, in respect of his genius. And the GC "talk" page on Wikipedia, added to it (maybe others will do the same?)

PS: I wonder how Bill Maher* is gonna deal with this... Carlin was such a frequent guest on "Real Time" and "Politically Incorrect".

*and Kevin Smith... future movies sans Carlin? unthinkable!

Ben Stiller summed it up:
Quote from: Derek Zoolander
a hugely influential force in stand-up comedy. He had an amazing mind, and his humor was brave, and always challenging us to look at ourselves and question our belief systems, while being incredibly entertaining. He was one of the greats.

And something George himself said is a truly universal condemnation of most people in most jobs today...
Quote
I had been doing that for the better part of 10 years when it finally dawned on me that I was in the wrong place doing the wrong things for the wrong people...
Thoreau's "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation..." and all that... :( Funny that up until seeing Lenny Bruce perform, Carlin was a more conservative-minded, unchallenging comedian. :o Thanks, Lenny!

CAREER RETROSPECTIVE DVD BOX SET -
SEPTEMBER 25, 2007

George Carlin, who has been performing for half a century, has just turned 70. For five decades the Grammy award-winning comedian, actor, and author has been making audiences laugh and think with his salty, provocative style of stand-up comedy.

To mark the occasion of Carlin?s 50th Anniversary in Show Business, MPI Home Video is releasing the ultimate DVD Box Set, GEORGE CARLIN: ALL MY STUFF, on September 25th. Suggested Retail price is $189.98.

This 14-DVD career-retrospective Box Set includes all twelve of Carlin?s one-hour HBO concert specials ?an unprecedented number? spanning nearly three decades from 1977 to 2005. In addition, there are two bonus discs: a lengthy interview titled George on George from 2003, and Unmasked with George Carlin, an intimate one hour conversation with the comedy icon; exclusive to this box set, that was taped in April of 2007 as the premiere episode of XM Satellite Radio?s Unmasked series. Click here to buy.

"George Carlin: ALL MY STUFF" (wow, prescient, wasn't he?)

PS: Mr. Analog, if you have the final HBO special "It's Bad for Ya" on DVD or other media, I wouldn't mind next week (as in JULY) having a group gathering to view it and celebrate the memory of Mr. Carlin. I would presume you out of anybody would have a copy of it :) ...if not, well for now at least there's always YT...
