Many of you may have played an Ultima game or two.  Well Richard Garriott, aka Lord British, as he is known, has returned from his space trip yesterday.  You can read all about it on the website above.

Seems Richard is the first second generation American to be in space, as his father was an astronaut for NASA.

Now if he would just get his ass back to game developing... I need my Ultima XXVXXIVXXVIX

You'd think, but much like Disco Boogie Zombies they cannot be killed.

He never stopped thinking about making games, though. Garriott has been working on something and now he's ready to show it to the world.

Garriott came to Kotaku's Manhattan offices to offer us a first look at Shroud of the Avatar, the new role-playing experience that he's been quietly building with a small team in Austin. He wants the game to free players from always having to be an intrepid hero character and promises that you'll be able to have a rich varied experience as a normal townsperson who isn't hungry for combat. Like many an old-school developer nowadays, Garriott plans to get funding for Shroud of the Avatar via Kickstarter. The project page just went live and you can find it here.

linked article has a couple of videos*, a 25 minute interview with Lord British, and some gameplay teasers from an early build of "Shroud of the Avatar".

(!) I didn't even know that a Youtube video link can be a LIVE STREAM. Kinda surreal listening to Garriott talk about the meaning of the words "shard" and "avatar". I feel like a grandchild sitting by the fireplace listening to gramps tell stories from days long past...

https://twitter.com/search?q=%23LBSOTA <-- streaming live, still, and still fascinating (11:40am EST Friday 08Mar2013)

the man keeps an Apple ][ running at all times, so he can show people the first Origin game ever... up and running still.

the game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akalabeth:_World_of_Doom

the physical media AND ZOMG APAPRENTLY IT STILL WORKS:

now he's talking about his exeriences as an astronaut, folks!

1. they have high speed internet on the space station
2. they run Windoze -- so "reboot the machines" is how every morning starts!
3. life support etc. are running on really old legacy stuff, dependable hardware, not reliant on modern internet stuff.

he's promising his new MMO is gonna be "far deeper, fresher" than the usual quest-grind that most people have just accepted as the norm thanks to EQ/WoW.  8)

Yeah, well, marketing and all that jazz. Won't get excited until more details.

Thinking Peter "Big Promises" Molyneux here heh
