Seems a recent update falsely detected a critical windows file as a virus and caused people to delete it off their systems. Ooops.

Nice!... Didn't catch me with that one though.  3xp stations at home, and all with AVG never hit this.  Must be during an active scan or logon task.

Once the scanner went active, users found their AVG software recommending that they delete the quarantined file. Doing so caused systems to either stop booting or enter into a continuous reboot loop. Whoops!

...which is why you should always have 2 PCs at home ;) (cuz otherwise how could you search online to find out wtf happened...)

Well, apparently the masses take their "broken compooter" to computer repair guys or bother IT savvy friends and relatives :)

Not everyone is loading Ubuntu from a flash drive to download diagnostic tools :D

I know you must be jokin'!  Most people finally just have 1 in their house.  And as Mr. A said, there is always a computer guy within' 6 degrees.

If your PC is screwed up, just ask your fridge for advice!

We're not quite there yet. Though I will attest to the handiness of having a Netbook to look up FAQs and tech articles about my motherboard when one of my RAM sticks went dead and I was still going "WTF mate?".

Geeze. AVG isn't all that bad (a bit of a hog maybe) but this is a real spot of bad luck for the image of the software.
