Apparently their 1 terabyte drives are croaking like a bullfrog with ten pound balls.

Yeah, its a firmware issue. You can upgrade your firmare if you have an effected drive (Theres like two or three affected firmwares). And its not limited to 1GB drives, but also the 640s and possibly the 750s and whatnot as well.

If it does happen, your drive is not dead. Just get a firmware update and everything should be peachy. Hopefully you don't loose your data before you bother to check.

We already saw one of these at work, and let me tell you that no firmware in the 'verse will fix it.  At least the one we had sounded like a WD Click of Death!  And from what we found, there are some that firmware will fix, and some that are just cooked.  Takes about 1 week to find out if the drive will live or die!

Its best to check the firmware before it cooks the drive. Though possibly your cooked drive was not related to the firmware error. The current failures are related to some bad firmware, which cause funky things to happen, as explained on the linked article.
