The Twitpocalypse is similar to the Y2K bug. The unique identifier associated to each tweet has now exceeded 2,147,483,647

So there's over two billion tweets on Twitter, and some Twitter services used a standard-sized number variable that could only count to about two billion.  Of course, the quick-n-dirty solution is to use a larger-sized number variable to delay the onset of the Twitpocalypse...

According to http://www.twitpocalypse.com/ at the time of this posting, there are 205 tweets recorded per second.  I'm sure that number goes up and down during the day.  But still...

HOLY @%&#ING @%&#!

That's a lot of twittering, Batman!

Ya well there is another article about 10% of the users generating 90% of the traffic, and the vast majority of users with accounts have never tweeted.

THis is what happens when one guy wires his cat door, and plants to tweet.

Ain't that the truth.

I find it oddly funny how huge it all is and how relatively spam free it is (I'm the one in control who I follow, so if I get spammed it's my own damn fault).

Yes, it's relatively spam-free, but you can bet your sweet patootie that there are marketers out there right now trying to figure out how to advertise using Twitter!

there have already been two virus / malware runs on the service. those URL shrinking services are ripe for malware links.

Oh believe me there are, there are "Twitterers" who were really companies who sell their "followers" to high bidders and similar things going on with channels so forth.

Hey, so funny story: Twitter now has "sponsored tweets" which basically injects ads into the service.

You have to actively deny the injected sponsors to remove those tweets.

And what a coincidence, I've nearly stopped using twitter

FUNNY THAT

damn you! to some of us that's almost like tropes-lite.

but it led me to re-read: http://www.xkcd.com/1045/ and I *finally* "get it"! (and feel smart now, but also dumb for not getting it the first time I read it a few months ago)
