This is just his opening statement, which is a cutting and yet so much truth.

He is actually there at the request of a congress women based on his experiences for the Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship and Border Security (from C-SPAN 9/24/10 coverage) in regards to immigration labour.

Thorin

Social commentary masterfully mixed with dead-pan delivery of jokes.  Surprised to see most people on the committee bench actually listening intently to him - other bits of C-SPAN coverage I've seen, the committee members can be seen nodding off, checking emails, texting, etc.

Very nice of them to let him talk and not cut him off after the first thirty seconds, and to not get offended even at the sarcasm at the end of his statement.

Classic Colbert: "I was surprised to find out that most soil is at ground level"

Hmm, I guess there's a whole lot more to Colbert's presence at Congress:

I wouldn't mind seeing the actual question and answer session they engaged in.

Colbert starts at 56:35, goes to 1:02:22, then is part of the question and answer session afterwards (for another hour?)

Yeah I've been watching most of it... Like Stuart, he is pretty knowledgeable in matters of government, policy and politics.

Mr. Analog

The important thing is that, as a celebrity, he brought attention to something that I think most people would have otherwise ignored.

I found "Man Of The Year" in the bargain bin, this thread reminds me I should watch it one of these days.

It's good for a rainy Sunday afternoon, it's one of those movies that sounds a lot better than it ended up being (sadly).
