I thought there's only so much you can do to make Rubik's Cube solving interesting.

It doesn't matter to guys who have figured out the basic moves - they just look where the piece they want is, do the standard moves to have it shift over, and bam.

yup, Pattern Matching ftw. Human brains are good and quick at that stuff, sometimes TOO good (i.e. when you "misread" a word, it's usually cuz your brain recognizes it as something familiar that is very close to what it actually is, also the main cause of most Optical Illusions).
