and no guarantee that Will Smith will take part -- since he demands a % of GROSS and nowadays that's a really tough gamble for studios, especially with giant-budget action flicks like this is likely to be.

So they've gone from remakes to sequels again *sigh*

How about a prequel ID4 with a totally different cast.

You know what made ID4 fun? It was fresh and different and took the concept of Earth VS the Flying Saucers and made it so much bigger and newer and with fully compatible firewire ports, a B-Movie plot with A-List talent, it was fun and stupid and stupid and fun!

'96 was a pretty fun year for Sci-Fi as I recall anyway (and this website helps http://www.movieweb.com/movies/1996/sci-fi ) but darn it it was different. Now they're gonna drag it down to Sequel Land and drop it next to the corpse of The Matrix

true, but also it was that rare tongue-in-cheek fun popcorn film with a huge cast not taking itself too seriously (without being over-the-top*) where there weren't that many super-minor characters/storylines. Everybody had a chance to "shine", many argue. I think that's part of its enduring popularity too. Ain't just "MIB: the prequel" starring Will Smith and Other People.

Bill Pullman, 09Jan2013: "Within a year(They might start shooting), yeah, something like that I guess."

the sequel has had trouble getting off the ground. Being a realist, Pullman is not holding his breath because the project is as he called it, "plagued." It is however, encouraging to hear that it does not all fall on whether or not Will Smith wants to do the film.

my guess is that with ID4ever (lol, yes the rumored name(s) = "Independence Day Forever (Part 1 and Part 2)" the storyline will revolve around the remaining alien baddies all pissed off about the iMac virus, and they have a psychic connection to the former prez, so they like abduct him and/or mind-meld with him and use him to do all sorts of bad stuff from within the human military/political machine to make us vulnerable. Then Part 2 = Mars Attacks! (this time with earplugs*)

that guess is based on the non-essential-ness of Will Smith's character. But Pullman being in no matter how the plot goes.
