Who knew?

CLIFFS: long-time Who fan is all like 'Hey writers/directors, something no longer feels... right. At the very least, stop turning the esteemed Time Lord into a buffoon!' , or something.

The series has had a long career and buffoonery has been central to that, after all the series was created for kids in the 60s.

In fact that more I think about it Doctor Who only gets teeth-clenchingly bad when it hits extremes and takes itself too seriously (which is why the 5th Doctor was not my favourite). There's a balance I guess.

Also I think the better production values hinder the show in that they can just show any old thing whereas when the series was at its peak it had to ... write around its limitations. So it wasn't gripping or hard sci-fi, rather it was interesting.

Of course the nostalgia glasses are on as well, I look back with fondness the old series because I grew up with it. I enjoy the new series because I feel it continues the tradition (and it's darn fun to watch).

In conclusion so-called "fanatics" are the worst thing to happen to anything, especially if that thing has been around for 50 years.

Well, I'm still enjoying it.  While I agree that there are some repeat elements, it comes down to whether I enjoy watching the show.  And I do.

By the way, what's your opinion of the new Who? Is that CLIFFS section just a summary of the article or how you feel?

I am delaying watching, partly cuz I STILL have not yet seen AiM, and partly cuz I really only want to watch it with my daughters who basically got me hooked on NuWho. Since there's ain't much material there yet, I'm likely gonna wait until there's a bunch of eps and watch them in a short burst because that way any weak eps don't feel as depressing.

But the CLIFFS was the article I linked -- and it was more than just a simple complaint "Matt Smith acts childish", in fact if you read the article you see that the author really appeciates the amazing range and skill that Smith is capable of (as do I) , over the previous seasons his being able to jump around from fun-loving immature [semi-]immortal to serious/angry/guilt-ridden old fart = an appreciated skill not everyone in front of a camera has these days! But something about the new companion eps = worrying that author. And thus it kinda got me thinking "should I even bother investing the time?"  :P

Yes.  Stop letting internet opinions shape your life; instead engage the subject matter to form your own opinion.

AiM - is that a reference to a Doctor Who episode?  Not sure which one you're talking about if so.

Yes.  Stop letting internet opinions shape your life

but... the advice that I just bolded above = an internet opinion.

(ps: AiM = Angels in Manhattan ... which is my bad actually, cuz that's not even the correct name, it's "The Angels Take Manhattan", oops)
