The Wikipedia article for the film itself = still just "Spoiler Level One-And-A-Half"... but there's literally NOTHING detailed about the plot released on the interweb just yet! It's like the Nolan brothers consulted with JJ Abrams and his "Super 8" team on how to delay The Big Reveal as long as possible in this era of viral social media... Well done!

So a new trailer is finally out this week.


Like typical Nolan, it does not give away the whole damn plot like most superhero movies the last decade or so, instead it gives a basic IDEA of the overall feel and focus of the movie, without giving away the surprises and twists and philosophical complexities or human dynamics that make a Nolan film consistently anticipation-worthy.

My guess is the bad socioeconomic times = just the backstory. The main story will be focused on the people and to a lesser extent the technology. Like great sci-fi should be.

I'll save some money and just re-watch "When Worlds Collide" (1951) or any of its derivatives

I was initially interested but now that the plotline is revealed, well there's plenty of movies already about a doomed earth = mankind going to the stars to survive, this one uses environmental dystopia as the catalyst (which smacks of 70s doom and gloom, "No Blade of Grass", "Silent Running", "Starlost", etc).

Ah well...

It's funny how certain themes seem to recur in groups, for a few years now there has been a spate of zombie / disaster films, just like the 70s

There have been a few really great films (like "Moon"!) hidden in with all the retreads. I wish there were more films that take the effort to tell new stories with good production values...

You mention "Moon". For that film if you read a single-sentence summary you would be dismissive in advance. But in the right directing/writing hands, it was an excellent piece of film-making. In this case it's in Mr. Nolan hands. imo he always surprises, and not just with expensive production techniques. His ideas (or more often, his brother's) = never a boring re-hash of what's been done before.

Some interesting tidbits:

Filing locations include Iceland, Los Angeles and Alberta (!)

The SFX company is Double Negative, which did the effects for "Inception" (as well as other Nolan ventures like the Batman reboot series)

The plot revealed so far is that a wormhole has become accessible allowing humanity the ability to explore far off reaches of space, the depression / dustbowl backdrop is used as the motivator for the main character to leave his family behind and go into SPAaaAAaaaaAAAaaaaAACE!

On another note I just found out that Nolan is doing a reboot of "Westworld" and I put my face into a pillow and yelled for a while

That "plot" reveal was clearly revealed in the more recent trailer (from July-ish) ... but some aspects of the Inception plot were sorta-revealed in the last trailer and yet the film itself still had plenty of surprises and decent enough storytelling and convincing character actions that it was not completely spoiled by a modern-age fear-based trailer (i.e. suits fearful of not enough people seeing the movie on opening weekend, thus show almost everything that happens :sigh: )


re. WestWorld yes I heard about that -- but like Logan's Run and a few other "classics" it's possible in the right hands that it could be done really well compared to what hasn't exactly aged well.

What rubbed me the wrong way with the first trailer (and to an extent, the second) is that there still could be a very interesting story there but right now it's wrapped up in a lot of conventionally popular things, things that are a tougher sell because we've seen them for 5+ years and they're getting boring:
-Dystopia
-Long windy dialogue
-TUFF decisions at every turn

Is this an episode of The Walking Dead or maybe The Road but with Spaceships? (Elysium ... *shudder*) It comes off as the Dark Knight^TM version of The Astronaut Farmer (but with a gravelly-voiced Matthew McConaughey instead of Billy Bob Thornton)

As for a remake of Westworld the same problem exists if they were to remake Logan's Run, the times have changed, so much so that the ideas and fears from the originals would be hard for the modern movie-going audience to swallow. The original Westworld worked because at the time (early 70s) computers were starting to touch people directly through their banks, bills, etc. These big computers were making mistakes like sending you bills owing of $0 repeatedly, which put the fear into people thinking that we weren't that far off taking these "electronic brains" and putting them into authoritative roles (aka Logan's Run) or programming them as self aware desperados. Not to mention the cultural impact westerns had at the audiences at the time (the guy with the black hat was always gonna be the bad guy).

Also I can't think of a single actor to fill the role of the Gunslinger that would outdo Yul Brenner, not just from his cred as a recognizable Western star but also as just Mr. INTENSE. He's that unrelenting type of character that really made the film what it was... which is why the original sequel (Futureworld) sucked and a remake is going to be challenging in the extreme to pull off.
