Griefing Servers

So I spent over an hour traveling 10,000 blocks away from spawn so that no one would be even _remotely_ near me, I crossed 1,500 blocks of snow and 8,500 blocks of ocean.  Finally I found land, and lo and behold there's various trees, an Extreme Hills biome, cows, pig, sheep, chickens, lots of seeds coming from the grasses, wonderful.  So as I'm figuring out the exact dimension of a chunk that I want to claim for my faction, Stewie comes home.  I tell him my gripes about people taking stuff on a supposedly "coop" server, and I repeat my gripe about admins just poofing things out of thin air and generally doing things that regular folk can't do.  Within a minute he's teleported to me and is looking around at what I'm digging out.

<sigh>

It's way too easy for admins to find people.

Usamot was completely quiet, but at least I know my stuff won't be griefed and I don't have to immediately start building a stronghold "just in case".

Speaking of Usamot, Mr. A, you need to re-do your shipyard build, I want to go look at it :)

Even with creative it's going to be a day long project and I got other stuff cookin' at the moment.

Report the user to your son, tell him the guy is being an asshole.

Yeah, I think I just needed to bitch out loud at jerks.  Also, I really don't want my little guy on a griefing server, he has a hard enough time hanging onto his gear on Usamot (never mines, never smelts, loses his armor / weapons / tools when he dies; he's an explorer and used to playing creative where all blocks are available instantly).

We need to have some more planned online times or something.  Or maybe I just need to finish up my builds and post about them to drum up interest :)

So 48 hours after the map went up, one guy had his admin privileges taken away because he was just /giving stuff instead of mining for it, then another guy got given admin privileges and he immediately set about /giving himself a ton of TNT blocks, placing them, and setting off a giant explosion - this resulted in a world reboot because the map was too laggy to use.  So I spent about 8 hours setting up a base and gathering lots of materials, then that got raided, then about 4 hours traveling 10,000 blocks from spawn and setting up another base and this time protecting it properly, and that's all for naught.  All because fifteen year olds don't understand the concept of Admins Have To Play Fair.

So now there's a new map and I set up a nice faction base 4,000 blocks from spawn; that took me probably 14 hours of play time.  Also, Stewie's learned to be very stingy with admin privileges for anyone, and the people that he does allow to admin all understand they need to be playing in Survival mode except when they're expressly helping a user with a problem.  He learnt that lesson pretty quickly, I was worried there was going to be a couple more world reboots before he caught on that real-life friends can turn into jerks online.

It's the old "power corrupts" thing, I'm guilty of it, it's pretty @%&#ing sad when it's destructive though. Ideally you don't need to op someone unless there are problems that need sorting out.

Making someone an Op for no reason is begging for abuse.

I'm proud of having built that damn airplane without using any op powers.  I used diamond tools to collect the wood and craft the portals and hallways in the Nether, and some of those diamonds were found using an ore-finding mod; I guess that's still somewhat cheating.  But I know I was offered op status and politely declined because I knew I'd just end up flying around.

Ooh that reminds me! I have to post the map we built at Fraga!

I made a kick ass skyscraper in less than 15 hours!

I would love to see that.  I wonder if we're going to be able to port-forward to allow connection to "LAN" maps in the future...

I thought you could do that already?

You can share single-player maps on the LAN by clicking the "Open to LAN" button.  I don't think it accepts connections from outside the LAN, though; I expect that you have to run the full server for that.  Who knows, maybe it _is_ possible to port-forward the default port (25565) to your computer so your buddy can join your LAN game from his house.

I think that's all it takes, it seems like all the files to run a server are created when you publish to LAN.
